NOT YOUR KID’S KARATE CLASS
Most martial arts programs do not meet the self-defense needs of adults for a number of reasons. Here is a quick list of why they don’t:
- Class ratios: In many situations, when an adult joins a martial art’s class they are put into a class full of children. Therefore, you train with someone half your size and a fraction of your strength. Unfortunately, most people who attack you will be bigger and stronger than you.Fail proof tip: Seek out training partners which are bigger, younger, stronger and even better than you! With our Insta-D-Fense program, you’ll have the knowledge, they have the body type you need. Perfect trade!
- Outdated methods: Most martial arts programs are based on styles that are several hundreds if not thousands of years old. Just as sports have evolved, fighting methods have evolved. Take a basketball player from the 1950’s and put them in a present day game, and they would be lost. Teach a person outdated defense methods, and the outcome may not be pretty either.Fail proof tip: Train only a handful of gross motor skilled self-defense moves which work in real life altercations. Don’t do something just because some warrior did it 900 years ago. Learn moves what work today!
- Realistic training: A lot of programs lack realistic training for their students, especially adults. Simulated attacks are very predictable, and take place in a nice, clean, well lit setting. However, the realistic situations stated at the beginning of this article never took place in that kind of environment. The first took place at night on a concrete sidewalk, the other in a tight stairwell, and the final one in a parking lot by your car. You need to train like you would defend yourself because we will defend ourselves as we train.Fail proof tip: Although you’ll need some reps on your moves, make sure you have your partner NOT tell you exactly how they’ll attack you – and then do it. Adapting is a key to making your moves work in real life.
